Diabetic Retinopathy

What is Diabetic Retinopathy?

If you have diabetes, you may develop diabetic retinopathy, which affects the retina, the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. This happens because a fragile network of blood vessels supplies blood to the retina at the back of the eye. This can cause blood vessels to become blocked or leak, preventing the retina from functioning correctly due to a lack of blood flow.

Diabetic retinopathy, if left misdiagnosed and untreated, can lead to problems and blindness. Thankfully, with proper diabetes care and regular screening, you can safeguard your vision and lower your risk of visual problems.

Diabetic retinopathy affects individuals who have type 1 or type 2 diabetes. The risk is higher if you have high blood sugar, blood pressure or cholesterol. You may have gradually worsening vision, sudden vision loss, blurred vision, or shapes floating in your field of vision.

Diabetic retinopathy can treated with injections into the eyes. You may be referred for laser treatment or advised to undergo a surgical procedure to remove blood or scar tissue.
