Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)
What is AMD?
AMD is one of the biggest causes of sight loss in the UK, affecting more than 600,000 people. It occurs when the macula, at the back of your eye deteriorates. The macula is responsible for our central vision, most of our colour vision and the fine detail of what we see. If the macula deteriorates, you may experience difficulties like recognising faces, distinguishing colours and watching television.
Dry AMD is when yellow deposits, known as drusen accumulate behind the macula. Dry AMD rarely affects vision and may never require treatment. Wet AMD occurs when abnormal blood vessels leak. Urgent treatment will be required as sight loss is possible.
The risk of AMD start to begin around the ages of 60. Straight lines may appear distorted, colours may seem faded, bright lights are uncomfortable and you may have problems in poorly lit areas. Wet AMD can be treated through injections. The best way to reduce your risk of AMD is to avoid smoking, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and exercising regularly.
